Molina Blanco Restaurant

Molino Blanco

A special and highly recommended restaurant in Tenerife.

The Molina Blanco Restaurant is situated in San Eugenio Alto close to Aqualand. The word in Spanish means “white windmill”, which is just what you will find at the entrance to the restaurant.

For hundreds of years the staple food in the Canary Islands was gofio which is a flour which would have been milled in windmills such as the one at the Molino Blanco restaurant. Today few of these windmills survive.

It was relevant for Don Felipo, who founded the restaurant in the 1990s, as the windmill represents tradition in the Canaries.

The restaurant is consists of an indoor dining room and a garden terrace. But this is not just a restaurant, as it also offers a side order of entertainment, featuring live music in a romantic ambiance.

The top quality menu is made up of  a mixture of traditional Canarian and international dishes. The chef uses fresh seasonal produce including fish, meat, vegetables and fruit. The cuisine is traditional done really well, rather than being a challenging alternative to what our palates expect.

It isn’t too expensive either, with main courses averaging at 20 euros and starters for 12 euros. You can pay less than 100 euros for 3 courses and a bottle of wine for 2 people.

Aloe Vera Fuerteventura

Aloe Vera Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura is said to produce the best aloe vera in the world, which is surprising when you think that the volcanic landscape isn’t good for growing plants in general.

Aloe Vera has incredible qualities and endless uses.  You can drink it, it can be used for perfume, for sun protection, to keep skin looking young, as shower gel or as shampoo.

Although it looks like a cactus, it is actually party of the Lily family, as is garlic. There are over 400 different varieties of Aloe Vera, but the variety with the magical qualities is ALOE VERA BARBADENSIS. It is happy growing in dry ground with little water, and likes lots of sunshine, making Fuerteventura a perfect place for it to flourish.

It has been used throughout the ages. Alexander the Great used it for healing wounds from battles and Cleopatra is said to have used it as a beauty cream. Christopher Columbus is said to have stocked his ships with Aloe Vera plants before returning from the Canary Islands.

We can recommend a trip to the Aloe Vera Plant, if you are planning to visit Fuerteventura. It is situated in Tiscamanita, or the Aloe Vera Information Centre in Jandia. There are also Aloe Vera plants in the Valles de Ortega.

Pyramids of Guimar

Pyramids of Guimar

rectangular terrace pyramid structures made from lava stone with no mortar

The Pyramids of Guimar are situated in the Chacona area of the town of Guimar, which is 40km south of Santa Cruz. They are terrace structures made from lava stones which are placed together with no mortar. They are clever constructions as the single thing which holds the structure together is the perfect and neat way the stones of different shapes and sizes have been placed together, closely knit with no gaps, making the structure strong.

There is a great deal of controversy over the reason for their existence. Some say that after the Spanish conquest, Spaniards were clearing the land for agriculture and piled the stones they found to make these structures. Others say that they are copied from the Egyptian pyramids. But for me a more likely reason is that they were built by the ancient Guanches. There is a cave under one of the pyramids which is known to have been used by the Guanches. It is 8 metres long and remains have been found there including beads from a necklace, earthenware fragments and fish and goat bones. The Guanches inhabited the island between 680-1020AD. It is also interesting that the town of Guimar, before the Spanish conquest, was home to one of the Kings of Tenerife, thereby making Guimar the capital. One would suppose that the pyramids were used by the Guanches in worship, which would include dancing, singing, wrestling and other sports.

Chinijo Archipelago

La Graciosa

One of the islands of the Chinijo Archipelago in the Canary Islands.

The Chinijo Archipelago is situated in the North East of the Canaries and North of Lanzarote. It consists of the islands of La Graciosa, which is the largest of them, Alegranza, Montana Clara, Roque del Oeste and Roque del Este.

The only populated island is La Graciosa, where 700 people live. It is a mile wide and you can walk around the island in a day. It belongs to the municipality of Teguise and forms part of the nature reserve Parque Natural del Archipelago Chinijo, which also includes Los Riscos de Famara, the rocky coastline in the North of Lanzarote.

Part of the attraction of the island is that there are no hotels and no roads, just sand or dirt tracks. This makes it ideal for hiking. You can also hire mountain bikes at the harbour or book safari island trips. There are plenty of long golden sandy beaches which are unspoilt and deserted. Playa de las Conchas is the most impressive of these on the North West coast, from where you have views of the other islands in the archipelago. The other islands can be reached by fishing boats but it is not allowed to land on them, because they form part of the Natural Park and are home to some endangered species. It is also home to rabbits and partridges who thrive on the islands.

Guests staying in comfort on Lanzarote can take day trips to Las Graciosa by taking a ferry from Orzola harbour. The ferries depart 3-4 times per day and the journey is around 30 minutes long. The ferry docks at Caleta de Sebo, which is where Jean de Bethencourt, the conquerer of Lanzarote, would have landed in the early 1400s. Most of the inhabitants live in Caleta de Sebo, which has a post office, bank, 2 supermarkets, cafes and restaurants. The rest of the inhabitants live further along the coast in Casas de Pedro Barba.

Excursion to La Gomera

La Gomera

Canary Islands

La Gomera is the 2nd smallest island on the Canary Islands. It has a population of 24,000 people. The capital on the island is San Sebastian de La Gomera. It is also known as the Columbian island, because the explorer Christopher Columbus one stopped here for supplies.

Like Tenerife the Southern part of the island is known for it’s warmer weather. It reaches an average temperature of 22 degrees C all year round.

Since 1445 La Gomera was governed by Hernan Peraza I. His son Hernan Peraza the Younger was very cruel to the islanders, the Aborigines of La Gomera. Because of this there was a revolt, resulting in the violent death of Hernan Peraza the Younger. His wife Beatriz de Bobadilla, with the help of Pedro de Vera (Conquerer of Gran Canaria), put an end to the revolt, but she was also very cruel. She was married later to another important personality in the conquest of the Canaries, Alonso Fernández de Lugo. She also received Christopher Columbus on some of his visits to the island. She died in the court of Madrid in 1504.

In the 16th century, the island was attached by Dutch and British pirates. The worst of these raids was that of the Berbers which swept across the island.

History of Lanzarote

Juan de Bethencourt

Norman knight who broke his lance on arriving on the island, declaring “Lanza rota” – meaning broken lance.

Lanzarote may have been named after a Genoese sailor called Lancelotto, who landed on the island in 1312. Or some say that it was down to the Norman knight Jean de Bethencourt who broke his lance on arriving on the island and declared “Lanza rota”, meaning broken lance. Alternatively, it could be due to the French nobleman, Lancelot, who came tot he island on one of Bethencourt’s expeditions.

The most important expedition in the history of Lanzarote was ordered by King Alfonso IV of Portugal. The sailors on this expedition counted 13 islands in the Canaries. There were 7 major islands: Tenerife, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, La Gomera, El Hierro and La Palma. Then they also counted 6 minor islands: Alegranza, Montana Clara, La Graciosa, Roque del Oeste, Roque de Este and Lobos. The sailors were greeted by the local Guanches graciously, but sadly in the years to follow there were many private raids.

History of Fuerteventura

Guize and Ayose

Statues of the 2 Kings Guize and Ayose

The island of Fuerteventura was first inhabited by a primitive pagan people, before the invasion of the Europeans. These people were called ‘Mohorero’, coming from the word ‘mahos’ which is the goatskin shoe which the people wore. The Mohoreros are said to have come originally from North Africa.

A wall divided the island into 2 kingdoms. In the North Maxorata was ruled by Guize and in the South Jandia by Ayose. Both were advised by two priestesses Tamonante and Tibiabin.

The Mohoreros used to live in underground dwellings and caves. They lived on cheese, milk, goat’s meat, fish, shellfish and golfio which is made from toasted barley flour and is still on sale in supermarkets today. They were a spiritual people, who used the mountains for pagan ceremonies and rituals.

Tenerife History

Mount Teide

Volcano on the island of Tenerife, Canary Islands

Tenerife was originally formed from three separate islands 3 million years ago. The island was finally born after the Teide volcano melted them altogether. The last eruption of the volcano took place near Santiago del Teide in 1909.

Spain conquered Tenerife over 500 years ago.The name of the Spanish conquerer was Alonso Fernandez de Lugo. In 1484 he landed in Santa Cruz, which was called Anaza at the time. De Lugo had been ordered by the Spanish king to suppress the last of the natives (Guanches). But the Guanches were very brave and courageous. There was a battle an 2000 Spanish soldiers died, and De Lugo was seriously injured. The town where this took place has been renamed La Matanza ever since, which means “massacre” in Spanish. However, despite this victory, in 1495 the Guanches succombed to the plague, which finally lead to Tenerife being conquered by the Spanish crown.
