This restaurant has been awarded a Certificate of Excellence on TripAdvisor where it has some great reviews. As a result it can get very busy so it is advisable to book a table.

The restaurant is situated on the sea front in Callao Salvaje in a row of restaurants. Don’t be tempted by any of the other restaurants. It is well worth the extra walk to get to this one.

The restaurant enjoys great sea views, as you will see from the photo above. It is a little on the expensive side, but you pay for what you get, as they say. The service is excellent and the atmosphere is very relaxing.

The menu consists of international dishes. The starters include garlic prawns and mussels. For main courses you could try the fillet steaks which are amazing or chicken breast with mushroom sauce, grilled steak with port and pepper sauce, lemon sole with Canarian or saute potatoes or rice with a garlic dip or mojo sauce. For dessert you could try the carrot cake, crepes and ice cream or the lemon sorbet with a shot of Russian vodka poured over the top.

Jamon Jamon is a Spanish restaurant, situated in the Atlantic Holiday Hotel in the resort of Callao Salvaje. It has a sea view to die for.

Your dinner here should start with a complimentary glass of sangria and some hot crusty bread. The presentation of the food, as well as the food itself is excellent. Don’t expect to get a plate bulging with food, this is a classy restaurant.

The restaurant is open daily between 08:30 and 10:00 in the morning when breakfast is served and from 18:00 until midnight for evening dinner.

There is also entertainment on selected nights, such as a Flamenco show every Sunday from 8pm, or sometimes background music is provided such as a keyboard player.

The menu includes tapas such as chorizo and mussels. There is also tenderloin steak, spaghetti carbonara, tuna steak, grilled goats cheese and tomatoe marmalade, meat balls and tournedos.

The dessert menu includes a very good creme brulee and excellent chocolate cake.

The wine menu is also very fine and includes some good local wines at very reasonable prices.

Macizo de Anaga

A mountain range in the North East of Tenerife.

The Macizo de Anaga is a breathtakingly beautiful mountain range situated in the North Eastern part of Tenerife. It was formed by volcanic eruption over 7-9 million years ago and is therefore the oldest part of Tenerife. The highest point is Cruz de Taborno, which is 1024 metres high.  In 1987 the mountain range was awarded “natural park” status and re-evaluated as “rural park” in 1994. In 2015 it became a Biosphere Reserve as it has the largest number of endemic species.

It is a wild and remote area with humid and beautiful forests including Lauirisilva. Archaeological finds have been discovered here including the “Guanche Mummy San Andres”. According to the local folklore there is a place in the mountains “El Bailadero” where witches worked and would have been found dancing around bonfires.

The main villages in the area are Igueste de San Andres, Taganana and San Andres. There is a beautiful hiking trail which leads to the village of Tagana.  Be sure to visit the Church of the Snows here with it’s little chapel in front. There is a harbour where you can watch the rocks in the sea. They are thought of as natural monuments, as if carved by the erosion of the sea over so many years. There are several restaurants here as well where you can sample the local fish dishes.  There is even a black sand beach.

La Laguna

San Cristobal de la Laguna in North Tenerife is the second most populated city in Tenerife. It is located close to Santa Cruz, which it is linked to by tramlines.

In 1999 the historical centre was declared a “World Heritage Site” by UNESCO.

Many years ago, La Laguna used to be the capital city of Tenerife, after the Spanish conquest in the 1400s.

It is home to the University of La Laguna, which is the oldest university in the Canaries and is home to 30,000 students. It was founded in 1701.

It is also worth visiting the Cathedral of La Laguna, which is the Catholic cathedral of Tenerife.

In the 18th century the capital was transferred to Santa Cruz due to a declining economy and population in La Laguna. But today it is still considered to be the “cultural capital”.

We would also recommend a visit to the Iglesia de Nuestra Senora de la Concepcion to see the fabulous wooden pulpit which dates from the Baroque era and the ornate wooden ceiling. There is also a museum inside the church, where you can explore more about the art and history of La Laguna.

It is a truly beautiful city with narrow streets and colourful townhouses and historic mansions.  There are also plenty of small shops and tempting tapas bars.

Tenerife History

Volcano on the island of Tenerife, Canary Islands

Tenerife was originally formed from three separate islands 3 million years ago. The island was finally born after the Teide volcano melted them altogether. The last eruption of the volcano took place near Santiago del Teide in 1909.

Spain conquered Tenerife over 500 years ago.The name of the Spanish conquerer was Alonso Fernandez de Lugo. In 1484 he landed in Santa Cruz, which was called Anaza at the time. De Lugo had been ordered by the Spanish king to suppress the last of the natives (Guanches). But the Guanches were very brave and courageous. There was a battle an 2000 Spanish soldiers died, and De Lugo was seriously injured. The town where this took place has been renamed La Matanza ever since, which means “massacre” in Spanish. However, despite this victory, in 1495 the Guanches succombed to the plague, which finally lead to Tenerife being conquered by the Spanish crown.

The resort of Callao Salvaje is situated between La Caleta and Los Gigantes and is around a 40 minute drive from the airport. There is a wide selection of reasonably priced restaurants to choose from as well as shops, a pharmacy, banks and supermarkets. In May 2012 the new beach, Playa Ajabo, was completed. It is a volcanic sand beach, complete with a life guard and beach showers. There are parasols, sun beds and little tables for hire where drinks and snacks can be served throughout the day.
